Pet Dog Show 2011

The Mosby Foundation sponsored our fourth annual Pet Dog Show at the Rockingham County Fair on Saturday, August 20th, 2011. We had 21 dogs registered to compete in 6 classes. To start the evening, we had 10 dogs competing in the Prettiest Purebred class, where Susan Palocsay’s gorgeous Vizsla “Sarika” took first place. Misty Yancey and her Terrier/Labrador mix “Ozzie” were the only entrants in the Child’s Pet class – Misty and Ozzie looked great taking their victory lap around the ring! In our Dogs Over 50 lbs class, “Dazzle”, Marcie Smith’s Boxer beat out the even larger dogs, and Jennifer Bennett’s Pug “Moo” bested the tough competition in the Best Kisser class, with an impressive full-face slurp! In the Dogs Under 50 lbs class, Ayla Landis’ Beagle/Pit mix Sarg took top honors. In our final regular class, Golden Retriever “Rodi” played an excellent assistant to Cracker Barrel Chef Amber Long.

Our Best in Show this year was “Dazzle” the beautiful brindle Boxer. Congratulations Marcie Smith and “Dazzle”!

Thanks to our emcee, Jeff Fife, who kept the crowd entertained and informed, and to our judge, Danielle Dundas, who had the difficult task of choosing a winner from among all those adorable pooches! Thanks also to all the volunteers who kept things running smoothly – we had a GREAT crew this year!

415 North Coalter St
Staunton, VA

What a wonderful time we had at our office grand opening/open house!  We can't thank you all enough for attending a major step forward for our organization. A special thanks goes out to Staunton mayor, Lacy King, who performed the ribbon cutting ceremony, and Staunton City councilwoman, Andrea Oakes.   Former Virginia Delegate Chris Saxman read a special congratulatory letter from Senator Mark Warner’s office.  Drew Densmore, from the office of U.S.Senator Mark Warner, was tied up in traffic, arriving a little late. But we’re glad to say he still got there in time to help us celebrate our opening.

The following folks donated food to our festivities: The Dining Room, The Clocktower Restaurant, Simple Elegance Catering, Martin's Grocery Store, Mugshots, Food Lion, Verona, Bob & Mona Denham, Joy Vandevander, Vicki Edelmann, and John's Computers.   Balloons came to us from Celebrate! and flowers  were donated on behalf of Middle River Veterinary Hospital.  Thank you Sally Goin of WHSV TV Channel 3 for filming the event.  A huge THANK YOU to all our wonderful volunteers and new friends who came to help us celebrate and who brought donations of dog and cat food for us to distribute.  A big BOW WOW to you all!

Staunton, VA

This was a two-day event that was well-attended and lots of fun! We sold our merchandise and passed out foundation literature to those not familiar with our program.  Watching some of the folks riding the mechanical bull was truly hysterical. Thanks to Bob Ladd and Marlene for inviting us again this year! You all are terrific!

Fishersville, VA This was also a two- day event in stifling hot and humid weather.  The gorgeous daylilies helped make the two days beautiful with wine and local beer a refreshing retreat from the summer heat. We love this event and can't thank the community enough for coming to our booth and supporting us so enthusiastically.  You ALL make it worthwhile!  A very special thanks goes out to Kenny & Phyllis Craig and Carole Adams for sweating it out!

YAPPY HOUR at The DINING ROOM, STAUNTON, VA was so much fun and a great way to help us raise money to help the dogs!

Thanks to RHONDA WARD, the owner, for giving us 20% of all the proceeds for the evening’s fun event.

We hope to see you all again in the summer!

This two-day event was a great opportunity for both students and non-profit organizations. For students, it helps build their portfolios and gain real-world experience. For non-profits it's free design work in writing, design or video production.  All in all it was a great experience for both groups.  We wish to thank Aaren Cecere, Mary-Kate Wilson, Luke Hartman, Kane Yoder, Grant Bell, Leah DeMasters and Allison Wesson for all the wonderful work they provided for us.  You'll be seeing the new brochures and Pay Pal logo on our website soon, the p.s.a.'s (public service announcements) will be heard on the radio, and the awesome video is up on our Facebook page and on You Tube.......just go to You Tube and type in The Mosby Foundation.  You all ROCK!!!!

Harrisonburg, VA

The world's largest cooperative mobile pet adoption event was held on a beautiful, windy March day.  North Shore brings their mobile van and houses local dogs and cats that are available for adoption.  It was a fun and successful event as we witnessed both dogs and cats being adopted all day long!

A huge thanks goes to JONI & HER STAFF at Sylvia's Pets in Harrisonburg, VA for holding a charity dog wash and giving the proceeds to us! It started out pouring rain but cleared up in no time. The sky cleared and it was a beautiful fun day watching all the dogs getting their baths! A special thanks to Kelly Keech, Carole Adams, Susan Banks, Vicki Edelmann, and Carol Jackson for volunteering to man the Mosby booth. And a very special shout out to Amber Rion for doing ALL the washing..........she did an incredible job! Look at some of these photos......they say it all!

Once again Phyllis and Kenny Craig came through for The Mosby Foundation! They worked like "dogs" raising $1325 in two days at this busy but fun event. They also passed out lots of information on our program services, educating folks on our spay/neuter program, and getting us lots of new volunteers. Thanks, Kenny & Phyllis.......you broke last year's record and in this bad economy, way to go!

Bridgewater, VA
After a week of rain it finally cleared up and the Bridgewater Adoption Fair went on without a hitch.  What a fun and beautiful day it was!  There were plenty of dog and cat rescues set up showcasing their available pets for adoption.  We also had Canine Freestlye demo's, agility demo's with a fun and funny competion with the children against the dogs.  The weave poll proved to be a riot!  Pony rides, food, silent auction, fun and good camaraderie finished out the day.  A big thanks to Marcie Smith and the town of Bridgewater who put the event together!

I just wanted to let you all know what a WONDERFUL event you held November 1st.  It was a wonderful event put on by wonderful people, and I was proud to be part of it.  I hope you will include PARTNERS! Canines in future events.  It is so important for all of us animal-loving people and groups to come together if we are going to make big positive changes for companion animals, and I think that Nov. 1st proved we can do that.  Please let everyone who helped with the Pet Dog-Fest 08 event know how grateful I am for their hard work and dedication.  AND, thanks to Mosby, next week I will be able to go out to the Page shelter to pick up Mischief, a Dobie mix who was dumped in Shenandoah three months ago, and give her that 2nd shot at finding her forever home.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!  Job well done.
Melissa Bahleda

The DARE group is very appreciative of what The Mosby Foundation is doing in this area and hope to participate in this event in coming years.  We gave out a lot of literature, and were surprised so many folks in this area are interested in adopting Dobermans.  Our raffle basket made $54.00 and we want to share a percentage with The Mosby Foundation.   The winner of our People Treats/Doggie Treats basket was Tammy Rowzie of Stuarts Draft.

On behalf of D.A.R.E.,
Ellen Miller
Port Republic, VA

I wanted to extend my thanks to you for allowing us the opportunity to share in The Mosby Foundation Pet Dog-Fest.  It has given us a platform to share with the public that we exist, and we are there to help the community when necessary.  I received several land usage opportunities from the event that are very helpful to the group.  That was exciting!

I know that it must have been arduous work putting that event together.  I thought it went great.  I had a steady flow of people stopping by and asking questions.  I think what you have done with The Mosby Foundation is very commendable, and thank you for the time and effort you spend.  I appreciate your enthusiasm in our shared facet.....the love of dogs!!!   (insert pic)

There were numerous wineries and micro breweries represented, along with vendors, music, seminars, food and lots of fun! A special thank you goes out to Kenny & Phyllis Craig who worked the event both days and managed to raise $1,000 in donations.........way to go, Kenny & Phyllis! We also want to thank Carole Adams, Kathryn Dobyns and Kelly Keech for helping out and spreading the word about the work we do. What fun..........we'll be back again next year!

Linda Cranston of Winchester, VA was the lucky dog that won the beautiful hand-quilted, king-sized quilt made by the members of the guild. On Saturday August 16th The Mosby Foundation was invited to the quilter's annual picnic and presented with a check for $2,000!!!! We just can't thank the members enough..... what a fun group of folks! This will help an enormous amount of dogs receive the medical care they so desperately need..........THANK YOU All SO MUCH!!!! Bow Wow!

Thanks to everyone who helped out with the Pet Dog Show at the Rockingham County Fair on August 16th. Best in Show runners-up were our Child's Pet winner "Bandit", a Rat Terrier owned by Matthew Coffman; "Charlie", a Chocolate Lab owned by Joe Coratolo, who won the Tail Wag contest; and "Lexie Love", an American Eskimo Spitz owned by Linda Craun and winner of the Costume Contest. Other class winners were: "Hanna", a blonde Cocker Spaniel puppy owned by Aspen Roadcap, who won the Look-A-Like contest; and "Pipi", a Boston Terrier owned by Brittney Hensley, who slurped her way to first place in the Best Kisser competition! A special thanks to our Emcee, Jeff Fife, who kept the crowd entertained while our judges, Ann Shifflet, Dian Thompson and Carol Jackson, conferred over the difficult task of choosing winners from among all those great dogs!

Thanks for the invite, SPCA! We all had fun!

Dayton, VA

A special, special thank you to Kenny & Phyllis Craig for working so hard at this fun fall festival.

The two of them raised over $1,465! WOW!!! They sold our merchandise, spread the word and helped a lot of dogs.............THANK YOU!

Two wonderful young ladies who attend James Madison University, Sara Woods and Sara Hagan, worked tirelessly to make sure the JMU campus learned all about The Mosby Foundation. They worked selling our merchandise and passing out literature on Wed. April 23rd, and then hosted an open house held on campus on Thurs. April 24th. The most wonderful thing is they were so successful that we are now planning on opening a JMU Mosby Chapter on campus. For us it's wonderful..........we love to see young folks get involved with community service and especially helping dogs in need! Thanks "Saras"! You girls are wonderful!!

This wonderfully fun event was held May 3rd in Reston, VA. It featured over 75 businesses, non-profits and rescue groups offering a day full of demonstrations, exhibitions, contests, entertainment and DOGS galore! If you didn't make it this year, bring your dog or dogs to next year's event and have a truly special day with them.

This is also the perfect event to attend if you are looking for a special addition to your family, as there were numerous rescue groups offering dogs for adoption. So thank you Reston Dogs and GoodDogz for inviting us.........it was so much fun!

Thanks so much to the dog and cat community for coming to Wal-Mart and donating 2 SUV's full of dog and cat food, plus donating $261.53 to help animals in need. With the downturn in the economy we know of quite a few dogs and cats that can use this help! Special thanks goes out to Carol Jackson & Casey, Vicki Edelmann, Kenny Craig, Julia Bortle, Barbara Bortle, and Kelly Keech & Bella for giving us most of their Sunday to collect for the needy animals. You guys are great! And of course, once again DOMINO'S PIZZA came through for us by distributing our flyers, collecting pet food and giving us a certificate for a free bread item to pass out with a 10 lb or more donation!

Congratulations to LINDA CRANSTON from Culpepper, VA for wining the beautiful quilt that was raffled by The Shenandoah Valley Quilters Guild!

Pet First Aid Class

Thanks to Pat O'Neil, instructor for the class offered by the American Red Cross of the Blue Ridge, we had a half day course on how to help stabilize a seriously injured dog. Pat taught us how to muzzle, band- age, perform CPR and transport a seriously injured dog to the vet's office.

Many pet owners feel powerless when their pet or another dog is injured or ill. This class certainly helped us feel we might have more control over an otherwise helpless situation. We also received a DVD, book and written materials to keep as a home reference.

Pet Dog Extravaganza
Harrisonburg, VA.

Well. the Pet Dog Extravaganza finally arrived. The day was blessed with great weather, wonderful friends, and a whole lot of fabulous dogs.

We would like to thank all the sponsors, vendors, and volunteers that came out and made the day a great success. Without each and every one of you it would not have been possible to have pulled this together.

A special thanks belongs to the exceptional JMU group who worked tirelessly on this project; Caroline Farley, Caitlin Hart, Colleen Hooker, Wanda Fair and Fred Rose. They worked endlessly since the first of September with never a complaint, only enthusiasm for what we do....helping dogs in need.

A huge thank you to Pam Shuler and Vicki Soles, who helped plan and execute the event. Vicki went the extra mile by working with Annie Hoblob of Barnes & Noble and getting Ted Kerasote, nationally known best-selling author of Merle's Door: Lessons from a Freethinking Dog, to attend the event with a book signing and slide presentation. What a job that was! Thanks for the extra special work to: Kathy Farley, Maureen Hooker, Linda Link, Sheli Rhodes, Dr. Stacy Reeder, Theresa Harvey, Jeff Fitt, Ted Kerasote, Sue Bernston, Betty Oister, Dandylion Whine, and Megan & Bella.

And of course, those folks who helped us out with freebies & exposure: Domino's Pizza, Campbell Copy Center, Elizabeth Rome with the Daily News Record, James Jackson with WHSV TV3, and Dennis Cupp with the Rockingham County Fairgrounds.

And those volunteers who worked so hard with their own dogs and put on such wonderful demonstations:

Chat Turner, Lori Curry & Jan Larson - Rally, Obedience, Freestyle
Sheli Rhodes & Wendy Pendleton - Agility
Rod Pollard & Noble - K-9 Demo
Misty Sampson & Laurel Warren - Search & Rescue
Jana Brady - Herding
Judy Paris - CGC

What a grand Saturday full of great food, music, and people at the International Festival in Harrisonburg , Va.   We were set up in a gorgeous park under huge Oak trees and had two of our Mosby mascots with us to entertain and educate people.  Thanks to Meagan and Sambuca for showing us all how to be kind, tolerant and giving.  Dogs are just the BEST!

And of course, helping spread our word, selling our merchandise and having a good ole time were Pam Schuler, Becky Lane, Vicki Soles, Linda Link, Mollie & Jim Toth, and Carole Adams.  You all are the greatest!  Thank you for giving us your entire Saturday and working so hard!

Dogs, dogs, and more dogs!  What a beautiful day for Pets in the Park at Staunton ’s Gypsy Hill Park .  A great big thank you to Cheryl Simmons, Chris Campbell, Molly Toth, Kelly Keech, and Bella for helping man our booth.  Also, Molly brought the beautiful quilt the Shenandoah Valley Quilter’s Guild is selling as a fundraiser to be shared with us.  We had a great time and met some great people.  Thanks to the SPCA for the invite!

More than 6,000 visitors and 100 exhibitors were on hand for the Vegetarian Festival in Charlottesville , VA.   Thanks to Joi & Chris Brown, Whitney Deitz, Melanie & Isaac Sweeney, and Kelly Keech for helping man our booth.  And a special Bow Wow to Jack, a wonderful Pit Bull mix now ready for his forever home, for being our mascot for the day.  Jack is such a big love bug and truly a fun, fun dog.  Please if you’re looking for a new family member, give us a call and you can come and meet the next new love of your life……….he’s really a neat dog!!

Staunton, VA

Man, oh Man, it was hard to beat the funloving crowd at the Shenandoah Harley Davidson event on July 21st! Nothing but good old fashioned entertainment and a dedicated crowd to round out a perfect day of laughter and goodwill.

Tons of people vied for a gander at the Budweiser Clydesdales, along with Buddy the Dalmatian. Then there was the Battle of the Bands Competition, the Miss Shenandoah Harley Davidson Contest, and the Summer of Thunder Bike Giveaway. It was a lot to pack into one day. But, as always, Shenandoah Harley Davidson did it with style!

Best of all, with the hard work and support of our dedicated volunteers, many of whom are new to us, we raised a substantial amount of money! Yeah! And, of course, every penny will go to help dogs in need! We can’t thank Bob Ladd and his staff at SHD, John D. Eiland, and Reddy Ice enough for the opportunity to participate in this event. You guys rock!

None of this could have happened without ANGELA BROWN, COURTNEY LEACH, and BOB LADD. Thank you so much for your support!

A special mention to ADAM BRIGHT and KAY HENDERSON who drove here from Harper's Ferry, West Virginia to help us raise money for the dogs! Way beyond the call. A huge special thanks!

Weyers Cave, VA

Thanks to Cher McCoy for inviting us! To Dr. Dobyns, Bonnie Hohn and Carole Adams for working our booth. Also, a huge Bow Wow to all the great dancing dogs and their partners! It takes a lot of hard work to put a dance routine together. A very special hug to our personal favorite, “Chip”. He is a very small Maltese rescue with severe spinal malformation who danced while in his wheelchair. He was only rescued three months before this incredible feat. What an inspiration!

The Craigs

Longbranch, Va

This was a fantastic fun-filled celebration held Oct. 20th and 21st amidst the brilliant fall foliage of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The sky was filled with over 30 Hot Air Balloons, bursting with color and special shapes as they glided morning and evening. Over 17 Virginia wineries were represented, along with great live entertainment, artisans, crafters, antique cars, mansion tours, children’s events, great festival food, and, of course, The Mosby Foundation. We sold our logo merchandise, passed out literature, met wonderful people and spread our word. If you’ve never been to this event, it’s a must!

So mark your calendars for Oct. 20 & 21st, 2007. We’ll see you there!

KENNY and PHYLLIS CRAIG for spending the night (on their own dime) so they could work our booth at the Hot Air Balloon & Wine Festival. They worked most of our “away events.” Thanks, you two!

Nikita & Suzanne
Steppin' Out
Blacksburg, VA

If you've never been to blacksburg, Va. for their summer festival, you need to mark your calendars for next year! More than 30,000 people attend this fun filled 2-day festival put on by the Downtown Merchants of Blacksburg. We were there, represented by Virginia Tech's Vicki Walter and Cheryl Clark. We can't thank you enough ladies for helping us spread our word to the New River Valley - we love you, and all the folks associated with Virginia Tech's Veterinary Hospital.

Steppin' Out offered us the opportunity to meet Suzanne Ament and Nikita. Suzanne is blind and teaches history at Radford University. Her seeing eye dog, Nikita, is literally her eyes to the world. Suzanne trained with Nikita in New Jersey for 30 days before bringing her back home. Seeing eye dogs, like Nikita, make their contribution every day, so people like Suzanne can make theirs! What a wonderful team!

It was a perfect September Saturday for the Veggie Fest. A wonderful blend of vegetarian lifestyle, conservation and environmental awareness, the fest is a celebration of all of God's creatures. We had lots of fun, as you can tell, with some of the "folks" who stopped by our booth -little "Mozart" and Carmen Miranda.

The next time you consider bringing a dog into your life and home, Don't Shop-Adopt. You can find the love of your life at a shelter, a breed specific rescue, an event such as this, or visit Petfinders.com.

BUELL- SHENANDOAH VALLEY HARLEY DAVIDSON came through with another fun-filled event and lots of support! Rally in the Valley Two showed us all once again that the hearts of bikers are just plain huge. (a lot like their bikes!)

A tremendous thank you to PHYLLIS & KENNY CRAIG, ANGELA BROWN, KELLY KEECH, JANET WILLSON, SUE BERNSTEN, VICKI EDELMANN, CAROLE & JOHN ADAMS and "JEB".  It seems no matter if you love motorcycles or gardening, everybody love dogs! And that seems to be especially true of our Harley-Davidson friends.

Sipping Wine and Smelling Flowers

What a way to spend a weekend! We were honored to be a part of the nationally known Andre Viette Daylily & Wine Festival on July 15th & 16th, sponsored by the Greater Augusta Regional Chamber of Commerce.  It was a beautiful weekend with families and friends enjoying all the activities.

And, as luck would have it, The Mosby Foundation was set up right next to a big pond with gorgeous daylilies all around us.  Everyone had a fabulous time tasting Virginia wines and Virginia beer brewed in small batches.  There were wonderful lectures on gardening, offered by nationally known gardener and author Andre Viette. The food was great and the vendors excellent.

And once again, we were overwhelmed by such wonderful community support.  A huge thank you goes out to Kenny & Phyllis Craig, Vicki Edelmann and Carole Adams.  You can tell by the picture of board member Kenny Craig and Miss Virginia USA, Amber Copley, that Kenny was certainly enjoying himself!

We want to especially thank Andre Viette and his family for hosting such a great event.  Plus, all of the Virginia wineries, South River Grill, and The Chamber of Commerce for supporting us!

Bravo to the Bridgewater College Women!

The Mosby Foundation has been adopted! As part of a class project with Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Virginia, Cassandra Thompson, Kristen Knippenberg, Amanda Coffey and Brittany Higgins volunteered to help a non-profit organization. And they chose us! Thanks so much, ladies! We greatly appreciate your support. Here’s hoping you’ll stay with us once the semester ends!

Virginia Tech Rocks!

What a great time we had on April 1st at Virginia Tech Veterinary Hospital's Open House.  A huge thank you to Vicki Walter and Cheryl Clark for all their hard work especially on such a busy day! The tour of the Vet Hospital was incredible.  The students, doctors, and staff were wonderful.  And I know we spread the message of our mission to the New River Valley.  Thank You All!

A fun time was had by all on February 21, 2006 at The Valley Community Services Board, Community Participation Program (for adults with mental retardation).  On hand were staff members Amy Hammer, Stacy Griffin and Lori Huffman.  Giving out free "kisses" and lots of love were "Owen", "Doc", and "Willy" escorted by Mosby volunteers Vicki Edelmann and Carole Adams.  We had so much fun.....we'll be back...once a month!!!

Rolling Thunder!
Once again the business of having good fun was
provided by Shenandoah Harley Davidson.
Two great events, the East Coast Hawaiian
Tropic contest and Biker Bob’s BBQ Bash gave
the whole community good food, good music and
great support of The Mosby Foundation. Thanks once again to our dedicated group of volunteers, Carole & John Adams. Phyllis & Kenny Craig, and Sarah & Libby Nutty, and Courtney. What red-blooded American male can resist a beauty contest? But Jeb had the best seat in the house. And by the looks of things, he knew how good he had it!

Jeb enjoys the limelight with a few other beauties at the Harley-Davidson East Coast Tropic finals.

K-9 Units
The Mosby Foundation spent a sun-fun-filled day at The Blue Ridge Emporium in Madison, VA. on Saturday, April 9th. The day was shared with K-9 Units throughout Virginia.
